“Eat, Drink & Be Wary” Offered Cybersecurity Insights

We would like to thank David Lumbert and his amazing team at Flagler Bank for hosting Eat, Drink & Be Wary Thursday evening!

Business owners gathered at the Lake Clarke Shores branch of Flagler Bank to learn about cybersecurity and battling potential threats to their business from weak passwords, phishing emails and ransomware. Mike Gavaghen, VP of Business Solutions at I.T. Solutions of South Florida, was the featured speaker.

He presented some staggering statistics, including:

  • 81% of hacking-related breaches in 2018 leveraged stolen/weak passwords
  • 84% of successful hacks exploit the accidental actions of employees
  • 60% of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses will go out of business within six months of a cyber incident
  • 43% of cyber attacks are on Small and Medium-Sized Businesses

It wasn’t all bad news. Mike offered a simple trick to identify 90 percent of phishing emails, provided examples of fake emails and stressed the importance of testing critical backups. The group also learned valuable ways to create and protect passwords.

Attendees were also introduced to the concept of man-in-the-middle attacks using a Wi-Fi Pineapple. Everyone got a glimpse into the Dark Web. A few lucky guests also received a free report from Dark Web Watch, a valuable tool from I.T. Solutions of South Florida. The Dark Web Watch report further enforced cyber dangers by detailing company credentials and personal information for sale on the Dark Web.
